Artificial banyan tree sized for a refined living room

What Size Artificial Tree Do I Need? A Simple Sizing Guide

The most common mistake with artificial trees is choosing the wrong size. A tree that is too small looks like an afterthought; one that is too tall touches the ceiling and looks squeezed. The good news: the right size is easy to calculate. Here is how.

The basic rule: measure the ceiling

Measure from the floor to the ceiling and subtract 12 to 18 inches. That is the maximum height of your tree, including the planter. The gap above the crown lets the tree breathe and look natural.

Quick sizing chart

Ceiling height Best tree height Typical rooms
8 ft 6–6.5 ft Living rooms, bedrooms, apartments
9 ft 7–7.5 ft Living rooms, dining rooms, offices
10 ft 8–9 ft Great rooms, restaurants, reception areas
12–14 ft 10–12 ft Hotel lobbies, showrooms, high-ceiling homes
16 ft and up 13–16 ft Atriums, double-height lobbies, malls

For high ceilings, see our large artificial trees, from 10 to 18 ft.

Don't forget the planter

If you place the tree in a decorative planter, its height counts. A 6 ft tree in an 18-inch planter stands 7.5 ft tall. Measure both before you order.

Think about width too

Height is only half the story. A wide, full tree needs open floor space around it, while narrow corners and hallways call for slim shapes.

  • Narrow spaces: slim trees such as cypress or dracaena.
  • Open rooms: fuller trees like olive, ficus or banyan.
  • Next to furniture: choose a tree with a clear trunk and a canopy that starts above the sofa or table, so it does not crowd the seating.

Match the tree to the furniture

  • Next to a sofa (about 30–36 inches high), a tree should be at least twice the sofa height to look intentional.
  • Beside a bed, the tree should rise clearly above the headboard.
  • Next to a dining table, a tree of 6 ft or taller adds height without competing with the table.

When in doubt, size up

Trees almost always look smaller at home than in photos. If you are choosing between two sizes and the taller one fits under your ceiling with room to spare, the taller tree usually looks better. Outdoors this rule matters even more: open sky makes every tree look smaller.

Use more than one tree

In large spaces, two or three trees of different heights look more natural than one big tree. A matching pair frames a doorway, fireplace or bed symmetrically.
